The
Mid-Hudson Family Health Institute was established in July 1983 to promote
primary care education, healthcare services and medical research in the
Mid-Hudson Valley region. The Institute is an Article 28 Diagnostic and
Treatment Center not-for-profit 501c3 corporation, licensed by the New York
State Departments of Education and Health. The major goals of the Institute
are:
-
Provide
comprehensive and accessible primary health care services to
residents of the Mid-Hudson Valley, regardless of their ability to
pay.
-
Train and
recruit primary care health manpower to the Mid-Hudson region.
-
Provide
community outreach to special populations at risk such as the frail
elderly, young families at risk economically, socially and medically,
the mentally ill and physically challenged.
-
Develop areas
of clinical research integrated with the educational objectives of
the Institute.
Since its incorporation, the Institute
has expanded from its initial clinical location in Kingston
to eight academic health centers, three community outreach
programs and administrative offices located throughout Ulster, Orange and Dutchess Counties,
for a total of 21 different offices. It has correspondingly extended its primary care
focus beyond family practice to include the full-time presence in the
specialties of obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine,
gastroenterology, pulmonology, critical care medicine, pediatric neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, podiatry and
dental services. Part-time specialty services are also provided on site
in adult neurology, minor surgery, pediatric cardiology, and others. In 1983, the first year of operation, the
Institute employed 20 staff members. This number has steadily increased
over the 22-year history to a current staff complement of over 300
professionals and support staff.
The Institute
is the sponsoring corporation for its academic health centers and the
Mid-Hudson Family Practice Residency Program in Kingston, New York. The
Program is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical
Education to train 15 allopathic residents per year and the American
Osteopathic Association to train six osteopathic residents per year. In
addition, the Institute has established academic affiliations with New
York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, Albany Medical
College and Medical Center and resident rotations at Westchester Medical
Center.
Over the years,
the Institute has maintained a commitment to its communities, providing
services outside the walls of the academic health centers. We have
established many vital partnerships with local industry, schools,
community agencies, nursing homes and other healthcare providers through
service contracts as well as major programs in early intervention in
Ulster and Dutchess Counties.
The governing
board of the Institute is comprised of 13 Directors, many of whom have
been on the Board since 1983. All members are volunteers, representing
Institute administration, the residency program, county and the
community a large. The Institute created a full partnership with The
Westchester Medical Center in June, 2000 in order to create a
comprehensive system of health care delivery between the two
organizations in the mid and lower Hudson Valley regions. The
partnership will allow the orderly, strategic growth and development of
an integrated delivery system.
The Institute
accepts patients of all payor categories including private pay, Managed
Care Plans, Commercial insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and offers indigent
families a sliding fee scale. The Institute has been working closely
with the New York State Department of Health on many projects including
the early intervention programs to families at risk noted earlier.
